Brief:
The Covid-19 pandemic caused by the corona virus has resulted in the need for enhanced infection prevention and control measures to contain its spread. These measures include educating the public in general, and healthcare workers, as to how the infection is spread, and to what enhanced measures need to be undertaken to minimise the risk and spread of infection both in the community and in healthcare settings.
Scenario:
You are a healthcare assistant in a long-term care setting and have recently been promoted to Infection Prevention & Control Officer.
As part of your new role, you have been asked to organise training for new employees to inform them of the infection prevention and control measures and the procedures, which are local policy within your health care-setting, to minimise the risk and spread of infections such as Covid-19 and other health care associated infections.
You may present training in either of the following formats:
1. A Training Manual
or
2. A proposed training strategy report to your employers

Standard Precautions
• Define the term Standard Precautions.

Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAI’s) are a significant challenge to healthcare systems throughout the world, including Ireland.
• Explain the term healthcare associated Infection.
• Provide some examples of HCAI’s (at least four) and explain how these are acquired.
• What impact have they in a health-care setting, include the factors which increase the risk of contracting infection.
• Why do you think HCAI’s have such an impact?
• What would you recommend and include your knowledge of the Standard Precautions, as an effective strategy to prevent the spread of infection?
