Ethical and Spiritual
The concept is in the Genesis story of creation and formation and signifies a connection between God and humanity. The Christian concept of imago Dei created an understanding that God created human beings in his image and present honor and dignity regardless of their mental, social, or physical status. The concept of the image of God “imago Dei” means that humans reflect the image of God in his intellectual, spiritual, and moral nature, and is only applicable to humans. The connection between humans and God through His image is important because mistreating the image is mistreating the original at the same time, ad God’s superiority deserves respect and honor (Rieg et al, 2019). Humans, as God’s image, also deserve honor and respect from other humans.
The concepts important to healthcare because the lives of people depend on medical care. People can value the lives of others by understanding the concept and granting dignity through preserving lives according to God’s intentions. Healthcare providers require the understanding that patients are created in the image of God, regardless of their medical prognosis and bodily functions. (Newbanls et al., 2018) Practicing the belief is important to healthcare givers to uphold the belief as a standard form of care.
Imago Dei is essential because all humans are in the image of God, and there are moral consequences for individuals who treat others like they are equal to other animals that God created. According to Newbanks et al (2018), the Christian concept of imago Dei shows that humans are superior to the rest of God’s creation, and taking care of each other is a responsibility, which is evident when treating the sick to get better with respect and dignity and hoping for them to get better. Additionally, the concept is relevant because it requires humans to love each other in the same way they love God.
