Social Movements Explored

Individuals use social movements when they feel a social institution is unjust. Current theoretical perspectives on social movements provide an awareness of the nature of social movements and their role in defining human behavior. In terms of human services, it is important to be able to recognize and assess the costs and benefits to individuals who participate in social movement activities (for example, healthcare reform, charity organizations, and disability movements) as well as the effects of social movements on human behavior.  Tasks:  Using the vignette provided in this module, your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, conduct research to support your response.  In a 3 page essay, address the following: •Provide a summary of the vignette’s key points as related to the social movements it represents. Identify and describe the concepts from this module that can be applied to the vignette to describe human behavior (i.e., cultural framing). •Identify and discuss the effects of the identified social movement on the individual described in the vignette. •Provide a summary of service methods or options that could be used to support this person. You can use examples you have identified in your own community as well.  Submission Details: •By the due date assigned, prepare a 3 page essay. Your response should rely upon at least 3 sources from professional literature. This may include the Argosy University online library resources, relevant textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, or .gov).      Carole, a 25 year old white female was having difficulty managing a variety of life issues. She grew up in  a lower middle class family in a small town in  the Midwest. Carole dropped out of school at the age of 17 after she began hanging out with a group of friends who were frequently in  trouble with the law. Carole began smoking marijuana, taking prescription pain medication, and drinkin g daily.
Despite her parents requests, she refused to get a job to support herself or complete her GED. fter several reminders and numerous attempts to get her help, when Carole turned 18, her family asked her to leave.
Carole was angry and felt betrayed by her family. Her parents gave her $100 and told her that it was time to be an adult. Carole did not have any place to go and initially manged by sleepin g on  friends couches for anight at a time and eating $.99  hamburgers.
Carole did not have a job, home, car, health insurance, or money. She finally got a job at a local diner where she waitressed, making minimum wage. Caroles job could not support her drinking or drug habits so she began providing sexual favors for money. At the age of 25, Carole learned that she was pregnant. She did not know who the father was and did nothave access to healthcare.
Carole was determined that she wanted to keep the baby, so she decided to clean up her act. She passed the GED high school test after completing a review course. She did not contact her parents to tell them of her pregnancy despite their attemps to contact her. Carole contin ued to work at the diner throughout her pregnancy but discountinued providing sexual favors. She attempted to abstain  from drug use and drinking but still occasionally smoked marijuana and a half a pack of cigarettes a day.
Approximately 6 months into her pregnancy, Carole noticed that she began bleeding. She panacked and walked 2 miles to the emergency room. She waited in the E.R. for 8 hours before she decided to leave aft e r her bleeding stopped. Carole wanted to see a doctor   but did not have health insurance  or other finacial means to do so. Carole believed that it was  unjust that some people could access healthcare and she could not. However, she did not know what services were available to her or how to access them.
In the middle of her 7th month of pregnancy, she began having contractions and returned to the emergency room. She delivered a premature baby boy that she named Jason.
