Workplace Environment Assessment
Work Environment Assessment
Review of the environment
The work of nursing has the potential of causing more danger than any other occupation. Besides the nurses are twice likely to experience work-related crime as compared to other healthcare providers. One of the issues that can lead to unsafe working condition in healthcare is incivility, increased medical costs and poor patient care (Clark 2019). However, the root causes of the high levels of poor working conditions are related to the increasingly complex patient population, workload and deteriorating interpersonal relationship. It would be essential to tackle these aspects to create the right working environment.
Description of the results
From the work environment assessment, the significant causes of most of the dangers in the workplace include work-related stress. Work-related stress arises from heterogeneous patient population and at times, the poor interpersonal relationships between the patient and the caregivers. In the events that these issues are not resolved, they escalate and even escalate to workplace bullying.
Surprising issues
The two things that I found surprising are that there are cases of bullying that occur among nurses and their patients and at times between the nurses. I would not expect that the working environment could have such cases since these are professionals (Clark 2019). However, one thing that I was quite sure about is that instances of stress are common in the workplace. It was confirmed that experience disappointment due to a poor relationship with patients and the other workers often put pressure on an individual.
Results of assessment
One of the things that the results explain the health and civility at my workplace is that most of these problems start slowly but slowly escalates. In most cases, when the issues come to be addressed, the focus is not on the root causes. Failing to address the root causes often makes the problem to recur from time to time.
Reviewing the literature
Description of the theory
Carl (2019) looks at cognitive Rehearsal. CR is techniques conventional in behavioural science. The focus of the approach is for individuals to interact with skilled facilitator where they discuss practical strategies that they can use to deal with a specific problem or social situations. The focus is to decrease, heightened confidence, anxiety and improves impulse control. These skills are achieved through the practice of effective ways of addressing potentially stressful cases. The effectiveness of this approach is that it allows the individual to rehearse responses that create a situation to communicate their expectation for appropriate behaviours in the interactions at the workplace.
Explanation of the theory
The theory is relevant to my industry for several reasons. Most of the young people that join the profession of nursing come with a lot of expectations. However, most of these individuals find quite different working environment when they get to the workplace, and this could be so disappointing (Clark et al., 2011). The role of the CR is to ensure that such individuals get to experience some of the work-related hazards and learn how to respond to them.
Application of the theory
My organization can use these approaches to orient and even retrain the staff on the experience that might they might encounter while dealing with patients. The most crucial focus is to ensure that nurses and healthcare practitioners communicate expectation for appropriate behaviours and future interactions. The focus is to prepare an individual for potentially stressful situations by repeating situations to strengthen the probable for a favourable outcome (Clark et al., 2011). With prior knowledge of the things to expect in the workplace, the nurses might have less expectation and thereby prepare adequately to experience these issues when they emerge. For instance, the employees can be exposed to stressful situations such as poor communication with patients and taught how to respond to the problem.
Part 3 evidence-based practices
Strategies that address the shortcomings
One of the approaches that the literature supports is the use of the “I” massaging. The focus of the procedure is to ensure those problems are successfully resolved rather than escalating the conflict. The purpose of the “You” messaging would often make the other individual feel that they are blamed for the mistake. However, the “I” messaging seem to focus on taking responsibility and thus finding solutions.
The approach that might help in dealing with uncivility in my workplace is communication. Teaching the nurses on how to communicate effectively might be one of the strategies that can help resolve many of the challenges (Clark 2019). While many people might know the problem that they experience poor communication often makes it hard to addresses the issues. Therefore, excellent communication is the best way that can help my organization to deal with challenges effectively.
Approaches to bolster successful practices
One of the methods is to establish healthy practice environments that emphasize workplace civility. Such a situation would focus on excellent communication and the understanding of the diversity among the various people that they encounter at the workplace. With such a pleasant environment, the changes in pressure would be low, and thus, people would interact in a better way.
The last approach is to provide an ongoing education that focuses on aspect problem solving, respecting communication to ensure that each individual has the preparedness requires at the workplace. With prepared employees, it becomes much more comfortable for employees to resolve challenges and even identify them before they occur.
