The Essay – The Major Essay Assignment will be approximately 1500 to 2000 words long (6-8 pages). There will be a late penalty of 5%. Extensions will not be granted on or after the assignment due date for any reason. You must apply for an extension prior to the due date. Extensions will only be granted for serious medical or family emergencies, both of which must be properly authenticated (bring a doctor’s note describing your illness, an obituary notice, wedding invitation, etcetera). Put a cover page on your essay with the title of your essay (be creative), your name, the course, the date, your word count, and your professor’s name (Prof. Howard Hisdal). Use 12-point type and double-space your essay except for lengthy quotations, which should be indented, and single-spaced. Include your rough draft underneath showing signs of editing. Use at least three books as well as articles, the Internet, and primary sources. Do not use Wikipedia! Use the databases that you have access to through the library. Please make sure you read your textbook on the topic. Your textbook has suggested books at the end of each chapter. List the sources you used in your bibliography in alphabetical order by the authors’ last names. The bibliography comes after the endnotes. You must use your sources in either footnotes or endnotes in the academic Chicago Style that include page numbers. Essays that do not have footnotes will be returned unmarked. A Chicago style guide can be found on the Okanagan College Library website or you can just look at the endnotes at the back of each chapter in your textbook, which is in Chicago style. Content and theme, use of evidence, coherence of argument, logical inter-relation of ideas, the recognition of main issues and above all: the addressing of the thesis statement are all things that your paper should have. See the list of topics at the end of this course outline. Academic History Writing Advice 1. Academic writing requires the use of formal English. Contractions (can’t, won’t, didn’t) are not to be used. Do not start sentences with numerals or dates. Abbreviations, clichés and slang are to be avoided such as: WW2, &, at this point in time, and it sucked. It is assumed that the essay is your opinion. Anything that is not your opinion should be footnoted or endnoted if it is not common knowledge.
