Influence of the IOM Report on Nursing Practice
Institute of Medicine (IOM) report has crucial messages that are aimed at transforming the nursing profession. The first message states that nurses should practice to the full extent of their training (Institute of Medicine, 2011). It is crucial since it emphasizes that nurses should strive to acquire massive training to prepare them for the nursing profession. The second message shows that nurses should strive for higher levels of education through academic progression. The message is important since it promotes the acquisition of knowledge to further research and evidence-based skills in nursing. The third message states that nurses should be partners with other healthcare professionals to improve the quality of care. The fourth message shows that data collection is effective in policy-making and workforce planning (Institute of Medicine, 2011). The different messages are significant to nursing practice since they are meant to improve the skills and enhance workforce planning for better patient outcomes. The messages are also comprehensive to redesign nursing sector and provide a quality work environment.
The report has an influence on nursing education and leadership since it shows that nurses should strive to acquire the full extent of training or education. It has increased the education preparation for bedside nurses (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). Currently, nurses strive to acquire higher education levels. For example, a healthcare facility would be hesitant to hire a nurse with an associate degree unless they commit to complete a baccalaureate degree in less than 5 years. Therefore, Bachelor of Science Nursing graduates have a better opportunity to be employed compared to those with associate degrees. Additionally, they are more skilled thus enhancing the quality of care (Institute of Medicine, 2011). Professional bodies have encouraged nurses to adopt skills mixes. For example, nursing management would require a master’s degree with three years of training.
Nurses have a role to take care of the aging population. Delloite health report 2019 indicated that life expectancy is likely to rise to 73.3 from the current 72.3 years. The increase in life expectancy presents new challenges since aging comes alongside chronic diseases. Nurses are thus required to be prepared with sufficient skills to handle the health condition of the aging population (Rowe, Fulmer & Fried, 2016). For example, statistics indicate that the aging population has diverse and severe health needs compared to children or young adults. Therefore, the nurse is required to be prepared for the aging population that requires long-term medical care and support. Nurses are required to advance their education in research and training since it will provide new insights on how to handle an aging population (Rowe, Fulmer & Fried, 2016). The number one killer disease is heart disease followed by cancer. It is upon the nurses to acquire an education that can deal with the menace. Discoveries can boost the quality of care since a huge percent of the aging population has at least two chronic diseases.
Diverse populations across the United States have diverse health needs. Minority groups are mostly neglected in the provision of equitable care to the public. It is thus essential for a nurse to engage in continuous learning or professional development (Rowe, Fulmer & Fried, 2016). The acquisition of knowledge is essential in tackling the health challenges the diverse populations are facing. Some of the health problems include diabetes, depression, drug addiction, pregnancy problems, bipolar, HIV/AIDs, hypertension, and cancer. They also face other social problems that contribute to the diverse health challenges including homelessness, malnutrition, and violence. Therefore, lifelong learning will be essential in providing solutions to diverse populations that have unique challenges (King, 2019). It will also be essential in promoting the health-illness continuum which shows that health comprises of mental, emotional and physical well-being. The diverse skills a nurse will gather during life-long learning will provide the necessary solutions to mental and emotional issues that affect the health of diverse populations.
Nurses have a crucial role in the evolving healthcare system. The healthcare system is evolving in various ways including patient-centered care, coordination of care and increased focus on the wellness of patients (King, 2019). Nurses have a role to play in reducing the wait time and promoting patient safety through a thorough examination. The nurses can ensure they always handle patients effectively and utilize technology to reduce wait times (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). Additionally, they can focus more on the aging population which requires adequate monitoring before discharge. The comprehensive monitoring will be used to prevent cases of readmission.
Nurses have a crucial input in engaging the patients even after they are discharged. In the dispensation of evolving healthcare, nurses are engaging patients on social media to promote healthy living (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). The connection with the patients enhances satisfaction and provides relevant information. On the other hand, evolution in healthcare settings has prompted the need for patient-provider communication. Therefore, nurses must remain in constant communication with their patients. Evolution in healthcare is also in terms of technology applied to treat patients (Rowe, Fulmer & Fried, 2016). Nurses have a role to utilize different technologies such as artificial intelligence to treat patients, diagnosis illnesses or transmit and analyze data for effective decision-making.
