A nursing informatics best-practices document can serve multiple purposes, such as a handout for new-hire orientation or as a background report given to a committee tasked with creating or updating a nursing informatics best-practices policy.

To expand your understanding of nursing informatics best practices within the industry, research the most current information about the topics of nursing best-practices documents and nursing informatics best practices.

Nursing informatics best practices policy on protection and effective use of healthcare data are essential in an organization. The proposed policy is to implement the use of blockchain in handling healthcare data. The focus is to ensure all the activities are time stamped making it easy to carry out an audit trail. Additionally, the data will be protected from any possibility of being deleted or tampered with. The nursing informatics policy on best practice will ensure all the data about patients’ personal profile, treatments, diseases, prescriptions, and medical recommendations will be protected from third parties (Furst et al., 2013). It is also crucial to note that the information will be shared freely across peers without the fear that the data can be deleted or tampered with. The purpose of this essay is to outline a nursing informatics best practice policy showing why it is needed and how it can effectively secure healthcare data.
Introduction of Blockchain Policy
The policy is meant to enhance the safe access and sharing of data in the healthcare organization. The focus is to ensure the data currently in the organization is protected and the future data that will be collected will also be safe. The policy will require that the current data in the organization to be changed into the new format to enhance proper and safe sharing (McGonigle, Hunter, Sipes & Hebda, 2014). The various types of data to be protected under the new policy includes patient history, reports, medical research, clinical records, and billing information. The purpose of introducing the policy is to enhance the safety of the data and prevent any possible attack that can compromise the healthcare systems (Shulman, 2015). Data breach would also reduce patient confidence and satisfaction.
Healthcare organizations are moving towards a patient-centered approach to medical care. The reason is that they are developing systems and policies that favor the patients. The reason is that if the patients are not satisfied, it means they are not doing their work correctly. The policy is thus necessary to guide appropriate behavior of the medical officers as they endeavor to create a safe working environment (Shulman, 2015). Nursing informaticists will be involved to actualize the policy. The reason is that they have the mandate to collect and manage data in a healthcare organization. Therefore, keeping the data in a safe manner will ensure that healthcare providers can make informed decisions. The proper management of healthcare information is necessary to reduce unnecessary deaths that occur after taking fake drugs. For example, with blockchain technology, every transaction is unchangeable and time stamped. Therefore, patients will not receive low-quality drugs which can complicate their health standards further (Shulman, 2015). It is thus crucial to implement the informatics best-practices policy on blockchain to enhance safety, management, and sharing of data.
Best Practices Definitions and Descriptions
Informatics best-practices is essential in healthcare sector thus it requires proper understanding of all the terminologies involved. Secure practices in healthcare informatics refer to the cybersecurity practices that promote safe sharing, storage and access of information. One of the secure practices is to use a firewall, educate employees on the safety standards, regular backup of the data, install anti-malware software, and using multifactor identification (Travers, Smaldone & Gross Cohn, 2015). Data security comprises of activities meant to protect data from unauthorized access or corruption of data. HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) of 1996 is useful in securing medical data. On the other hand, patient confidentiality is the right of a patient to have his or her medical information to be available only to nurses and other healthcare providers. Patient confidentiality is protected by the federal statute. Patients have the right to sue a person or health organization if their right to patient confidentiality is compromised (Travers, Smaldone & Gross Cohn, 2015). For example, it can happen if the nurses share medical reports or publish them as case studies without hiding the identity of patients.
Ethical standards are actions meant to promote values such as honesty, fairness or kindness. Healthcare sector is guided by four major ethical standards including justice, benevolence, autonomy, and non-maleficence. Autonomy means that patients are to make personal decisions without coercion (Travers, Smaldone & Gross Cohn, 2015). Justice means that healthcare services must be distributed to all patients equally. Benevolence means that all actions to be carried out with the intention of enhancing patient outcomes. Non-maleficence requires nurses to carry out procedures that do not harm the patient or society. Therefore, all the ethical standards must be followed to the letter to ensure the best practice policy is implemented. On the other hand, regulatory requirements refer to compliance with the rule of the law. It requires that all policies should be in line with the already established rule of law, acts or government directions (Darvish, Bahramnezhad, Keyhanian & Navidhamidi, 2014). Healthcare providers who follow regulatory requirements enhance patient safety and improve data security leading to best practices. Informaticists are required to comply with the regulatory requirements when they are collecting, sharing, managing and storing data.
Behavior of Nurse Leaders
Nurse leaders have an impact on the success of health policy. In the current case, the policy is on implementation of blockchain. The purpose of implementing blockchain is to enhance the security of the data. Nurse leaders have the responsibility of gaining a thorough understanding of the blockchain, data security and implementation of the policy (Darvish, Bahramnezhad, Keyhanian & Navidhamidi, 2014). When the nurse leaders are informed, it will be easier to pass the message down to others. Nurse leaders have a task of emphasizing that the implementation of best practices is geared towards enhancing patient care. Nurse leaders have a responsibility of actively engaging other healthcare providers to enhance the practice practices. While nurse leaders know what is required, it is their responsibility to collaborate with other professionals to provide patient satisfaction (Darvish, Bahramnezhad, Keyhanian & Navidhamidi, 2014). They also enhance proper organization by allocating duties to other nurses. Therefore, best practices on the nursing informatics are enhanced when the roles are shared to the specific people who can execute them professionally.
Nurse leaders should be positive while implementing the policy. They should help other medical officers visualize the policy with positivism. The intention is to enhance a positive attitude among the group. The ideas should be to collaborate with healthcare providers to enhance patient care (Furst et al., 2013). It should be the focus of the nurse leaders to remain open to suggestions or criticism on how they can improve the policy. The reason is that healthcare providers may identify some loopholes of the policy, which require immediate attention. It is also important for nurse leaders to remain vibrant in championing the policy relentlessly (McGonigle, Hunter, Sipes & Hebda, 2014). The reason is that policy implementation may face some challenges, but it would be important to consistently insist on the need to embrace best practice in healthcare.
Skills Needed
Nurse leaders require various skills for successful implementation of best practice policy. One of the skills is emotional intelligence which requires a leader to visualize an issue from the perspectives of other people. Therefore, it will help in understanding the various stakeholders involved in implementing the policy (McGonigle, Hunter, Sipes & Hebda, 2014). The idea of pushing for the best practice requires dedication and critical thinking skills. The reason is that in some cases there will be a need for the extra effort required in making an array of decisions during multidisciplinary collaboration. Communication skills are also necessary to help the nurse leader to communicate with other stakeholders and understand their perspectives (Shulman, 2015). Communication skills are necessary to use the various channels of communication ensure the parties involved receive the intended message. During the implementation of a policy, the nurse leader should not forget that respect is an important skill (Shulman, 2015). Although various stakeholders are involved, they all need to be approached with respect to avoid any form of resistance.
Professionalism is also required in the process of implementing the policy. The reason is that it will show the competency of a leader to handle organizational issues. It involves documenting the policy success, drawbacks and challenges and presenting them in the form of a report. It is also crucial to summarize the reasons why policy implementation is important (Travers, Smaldone & Gross Cohn, 2015). In case there are questions, the nurse leader should answer them comprehensively. The professional socialization also includes communicating with the various healthcare providers using official channels such as memos or calling for meetings. The skills of a nurse leader determine the success of policy implementation since it depends on the input of various stakeholders.
