This week we will study behavior theory. Unlike other theories of psychotherapy, behavior theory is rooted in experimental psychology and the study of the learning process in humans. While behavior theory has numerous contributors, three of the most prominent are Pavlov, Skinner, and Bandura.
This week’s discussion has two distinct parts:
Part I — Briefly compare and contrast behavior theory according to Pavlov, Skinner, and Bandura. Be specific and consult peer-reviewed literature when making your response.
Part II — Pages 294-298 in the course text identifies a number of principles germane to behavior theory (e.g. positive/negative reinforcement, extinction, generalization, discrimination, shaping, and observational learning). Which of these principles do you believe would be most effective when used in a school setting? Why? Be specific.
