Introduction
Pregnant mothers are concerned about various issues regarding their health. However, using mobile apps is associate with reduced in-person visits to the hospital. According to Hughson et al. (2018), the reduction is essential in reducing the cost of healthcare. The purpose of the paper is to examine a clinical question on pregnancy apps.
Clinical Question
The clinical topic will focus on the safety of pregnant mothers and their welfare in making unnecessary visits to a clinic. The clinical question is; in nulliparous mothers, do pregnancy-tracking mobile applications lead to reduction in-person hospital visits compared with self-tracking throughout the gestation?
The clinical issue is relevant to the current generation, especially during the pandemic. It will investigate if pregnant mothers can avoid making unnecessary visits to the clinic thus reducing the exposure to the virus.
Clinical Problem
Using pregnancy application is an effective approach to improve the safety and welfare of patients. Wang et al. (2019) indicate that the application helps pregnant mothers to take action on time before a condition deteriorates. The action can save a pregnancy or eliminate the possibility of an unnecessary visit to the hospital. Statistics indicate that approximately 5 percent of the nations’ population is pregnant (Bush et al., 2017). The population involves even teenage girls who are at risk of health complications. Research also shows that 10-15 percent of pregnant women end up in miscarriage (Ledford et al., 2016). Different problems cause health issues among expectant mothers thus requiring better measures to safeguard their welfare.
The issue is also a clinical problem since statistics indicate that almost a third of the hospital visits among pregnant women is unnecessary (Marko et al., 2019). The unnecessary visits add to the cost of care thus burdening the healthcare budget. For example, some mothers to the clinic after experiencing minor changes resulting in fear of miscarriage. However, healthcare practitioners realize that nothing abnormal has happened. The cases are common among nulliparous women or underage girls (Marko et al., 2019). It is thus important to realize the value of pregnancy applications in reducing the rate of hospital visits that lead to higher healthcare expenditure.
Women who are not using a pregnancy test are likely to make wrong decisions or visit the healthcare facility to ask simple questions. For example, pregnant women need to know if they can still exercise, the rate of their fetal growth, whether the baby is healthy, and medical appointments that are coming up (Marko et al., 2019). All the information is available using a pregnancy application and thus reducing the rate of visits to a healthcare facility.
Best Article
The article that best describes the clinical issue of interest is by Marko et al. (2019). The article indicates that a mobile prenatal care app is essential in reducing in-person visits. The controlled trial involved 88 women aged 18-40 years. The study that was carried out in Washington D.C is convincing since it demonstrated that the application reduced in-person visits and patient satisfaction. It is unlike other studies that demonstrated poor customer satisfaction. The other studies do not show the value of mobile apps in reducing in-person visits. For example, Hughson et al. (2018), analyzes the increase of apps and the effect among culturally diverse women. Wang et al. (2019) examine the use of mobile apps among Chinese women. Bush et al. (2017) evaluate apps on nulliparous women and health outcomes. Finally, Ledford et al. (2016), discusses mobile apps as an education tool. Therefore, only Marko et al. (2019), presents a relationship between the apps and in-person visit as outlined in the PICOT question.
Conclusion
Pregnant mothers are concerned about their health leading to frequent hospital visits. However, today, women can use mobile apps to reduce in-person visits. Research shows that mobile apps provide reliable information and enhance decision-making among pregnant women.
