The first study is a research trial conducted at a local hospital, Duke University Hospital, where neurosurgeons are using recombinant, nonpathogenic polio-rhinovirus to treat grade IV malignant glioma, or glioblastoma, a severe and aggressive brain tumor with a typically-dismal prognosis. However, patients with recurrent glioblastoma enrolled in the clinical trial at the Duke Cancer Institute are seeing a three-year survival rate of 21% in phase 1 of the trial compared to just 4% for the patients undergoing the previously-available standard treatment at Duke.
