Global Poverty & Inequality (PSCI 383w-1) (42659) Research Paper Assignment A main component of this seminar is developing a substantive research paper (15-20pp) where you explore any of the issues we will cover in class more thoroughly. A research paper is nothing more than a logically and empirically sound answer to a well-thought-out question. But it is also a form of persuasive writing, which requires not only describing something, but also making an argument about why something is the way it is, as well as providing evidence to support that argument (more on this later).

I want to give you as much freedom as possible to focus on a specific issue that interests or puzzles you (e.g. how do we conceptualize and debate issues of gender inequality?) or policy debate (e.g. is a specific policy approach, such as means-tested welfare, an adequate tool with which to address poverty?). But too much freedom can also get you in trouble, if you can’t focus your interest into a question that you can answer reasonably well within the time and space constraints of the assignment.

As much latitude as possible to concentrate on a specific problem that interests or baffles you (for example, how do we perceive and debate issues of gender inequality?) is what I want to provide you. For example, is a given policy approach (such as means-tested welfare) an adequate instrument for combating poverty? However, if you are unable to narrow your interests down to a subject that you can reasonably answer within the time and space limits of the assignment, you may find yourself in difficulty.
