Please make sure you answer the questions for the appropriate scenarios no late submissions will be accepted. Remember all of these scenarios have a cultural aspect to them, so you may need to research the assumption being made in the scenario about the specific culture mentioned, to assist you with your response.
1. A patient, who is Indian, is in the hospital and is ordering what they want for lunch. The healthcare professional discussing their lunch order states “We have hamburgers and steak” and the patient replies “I don’t eat meat.” The healthcare professional says back “Oh, I could not go without meat for meals at least twice a day.” The healthcare provider then proceeds to ask the patient “How could you possibly not eat beef?” What about the healthcare workers statements are projecting the wrong impression and how could they better communicate in this situation without projecting their preferences?
2. Two healthcare professionals, in the United States, are walking through a family waiting area in a healthcare facility. A Hispanic family is speaking to each other in Spanish. One healthcare professional says to the other “I wish I would have taken Spanish in school.” The other healthcare professional replies “We are in America so they should speak in English not Spanish.” How might you address these comments? What are the assumptions being made here in this conversation?
