Module 4: Case Study 1
Cultural competence denotes to the capability of health care professionals and institutions to efficiently offer healthcare services that are tailored to meet the cultural, social, and linguistics needs of patients. Cultural competence is beneficial in that it helps to enhance the outcomes of health and care quality and contributes to the eradication of ethnic and racial health disparities (Public Health Leadership Society, 2002). The limit of cultural competence includes the insufficiency of research founded on outcomes that offers proof of effectiveness of cultural competence approaches.
The demand-for-services should mould Covenant Health Center’s approach. For this reason, the provision of services should be featured by the degree of actual consumption of a person in case of facing illness or injury; this consumption could differ depending on the factors of demand such as education, traditions, social norms, income and the cost of care. In this regard, the mission of the health center would not be changed. This is because it aligns with this kind of service.
One of the ethical considerations pertains to enhancing the quality of care provided to patients. The bilingual social worker and part-time English interpreter will serve to meet the cultural needs of different patients leading to an improvement in services offered. However, it should also be noted that current providers can be trained on how to deliver efficient cultural competent care. Another consideration relates to enhancing access to care. Some patients would feel more comfortable visiting the health center if they feel their cultural needs will be met.
Based on the above analysis, I would take this approach. I believe that the approach will serve to encourage more patients to seek our services because they know that there are providers who understand them and their customs, and will hence more likely incorporate their cultural needs in their treatments. Another option is for the clinic to have paintings/pictures/walls/colors etc that reflect the different cultures of the community.
Public health organizations and health care providers encourage their employees to gain “cultural competence” by for instance, advising them to learn to listen from the patients and learn from them and being open to cultural and racial differences. Healthcare providers are also encouraged to be friendly and respectful when interacting with all patients. Interacting freely with the community so as to understand them better is also highly advised.
