Social crime prevention
Social crime prevention
Social crime prevention is the strategies that are deployed to reduce the risk of criminal or violent behavior. The measures are used to improve the resilience of the perpetrators from committing more crimes. The measures include interventions such as supporting the youth in acquiring work-related skills. Another strategy is to intervene in young pregnant women from alcohol abuse. Social crime intervention interacts with individual behaviors that lead perpetrators to commit crimes. The role of social crime prevention in the USA focuses on the economic and social factors that contribute to violence. The strategies hold a place in the U.S because policing communities is not enough to reduce crime (Bruce and Gould,2009). However, social crime prevention strategies are slow compared to arrests and incapacitation.
The history of crime prevention in the United States is based on quick results through policing and punishment. The levels of violence and other prevalent crimes continue to rise. Therefore; the police and criminal justice strategies can only go so far as to prevent crimes. The challenge of implementing social crime prevention is that the strategies are considered to be soft on crime. The strategy involves reducing social risk factors in societal groups like peers, families, and communities. The major challenge is the argument that the police should still play a role in social crime prevention strategies.
Crime analysts can play a role in integrating social crime prevention by providing the system with the necessary data. The criminal justice system needs the necessary details that illuminate public values and the environmental design that can reduce crime. The criminal justice reform and the law enforcement system can get strengthened by crime prevention targeted at specific areas and situations. For example, the social crime prevention agenda can implement an intervention in preventing domestic violence through victim empowerment (Jackson and Carol, 2011).
Crime analysis and other analysis outside the criminal justice system can be used to assist community agencies. For example in Karl Von’s analysis on the dysfunctionality in the public health system is relatable to the delivery problems in social crime prevention. Shortage of resources is a leading cause of poor delivery. Poor system design fails to provide a function-able structure that can reduce crime. Research shows that law enforcement based on crime prevention policy does not include social crime prevention policies (Grant,2014). Therefore, the system fails to perform these roles effectively. The result causes impunity, racial discrimination, and corruption. Some policies have been introduced in the community to prevent crime. However, there has been an absence of development and implementation approaches.
The most relevant data to collect as a crime analyst is the policing practices in a community. Policing practices tend to ignore human rights by administering heavy punishment on crimes. The data collected will enable the analyst to find a place for social crime preventing in the policing system. The two approaches need to be on the same page. Analyzing the ability of the community to execute crime prevention is relevant as well. The proposal must match the skills and ability of the community to implement social crime prevention. Finally, the data collected will determine the level of engagement required in the community (Grant,2014). Influencing peers through education and career guidance is a movement that can prevent crime in the community. Empowering victims of domestic violence with self-defense skills is a social movement that can reduce crime. Also; the analysis will include the historical political and economic factors that can be effective in the crime prevention discourse.
