I loved reading your post; it is both interesting and informative. In my opinion, you have addressed the issue of natural selection quite well as anyone reading it can have a clear picture of what it is. For instance, your definition of the term is short and simple, and hence easily understandable. Natural selection is a key mechanism of evolution, and you have highlighted this fact; I also find this to be commendable. You have stated that once the conversation of natural selection moves to DNA and other genetic specifics, your attention begins to wander. I believe you do so because you may find such subjects to be complicated to understand.
I must confess that I am intrigued about the role that DNA plays in natural selection; as such, this is my favorite part about natural selection. I love reading about how genetic variations help organisms to better adapt to their changing environment. Apparently, genetic variation is caused by a variety of factors including random mating between organisms, mutation, random fertilization, etc (Pierce 78). Some of these factors rearrange alleles within a population, giving offspring combinations that are dissimilar from their parents and from others. Notably, populations that have low genetic variations are normally threatened; this is because they are normally vulnerable to illness and usually pass lethal recessive mutations to their species.
I do agree with you that from a religious perspective, some people may have challenges grasping the notion. For instance, Christians particularly oppose the notion of evolution because it goes against their beliefs that God is the one who created heaven and earth and everything in it. In addition, the notion that organisms adapt to their environment is contrary to their conviction that God created an environment that is perfect for human beings.
