The term criminal justice system denotes to a compilation of local, state and federal public agencies that tackle crime problems. These agencies work to process crime suspects, the accused, and convicted criminals. In this regard, the criminal justice system components include police departments, courts, and corrections. The main purposes of police departments are to maintain order, enforce criminal law and offer services (Pakes, 2012). In particular, they investigate crimes, collect and safeguard evidence, and take reports on different crimes. As such, police officers may arrest criminals, provide testimony in court and continue investigations after making an arrest. Courts are basically tribunals where people who are accused of breaking the law come to have their criminal accountability established by judges or juries. The courts’ purposes are to ascertain the truth and seek justice. Defense attorneys, prosecutors, and judges are the key actors in the courts.
The corrections system seeks to separate offenders convicted in the courts from the rest of society. Professionals in corrections work to assist rehabilitate criminals, and offer a system where individuals accused of committing crimes are monitored and released-with the hope that they will not engage in crime again. Importantly, the purposes of correctional agencies are to punish, rehabilitate and ensure the safety of the public (Mears, 2017). Notably, corrections encompass prison, jail, parole, and different community-based sanctions like house arrest and electric monitoring. The components do collaborate and cooperate to function as a system. For instance, the courts rely on the police departments to investigate crimes and collect sufficient evidence that pertain to the crimes; the courts then use the evidence presented to make its decisions. The courts also rely on the corrections systems to execute the punishments it has imposed on convicted criminals.
