Violent Video Game Should be Banned
Most children and adolescents prefer playing violent video games as a form of entertainment. Although it is exciting, it is also harmful. States such as California have proposed banning the sale of violent video games to minors. Violent video games should be banned to avoid their adverse effects.
Research conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics revealed that exposure to violent media content results in aggressive behavior, aggressive cognition, and anger feeling. That results in bullying and violence against other kids in school. Banning of these videos will reduce bullying and delinquent acts among children.
Apart from that, playing video games has detrimental effects on the brain. It hinders development, leading to brain damage. The brain’s frontal lobes play a crucial role in academic success. Exposure to educational content encourages constructive learning leading to the growth of the neuronal tracks in the frontal lobes. The consumption of entertainment content is passive learning, it leads to frontal lobes pruning.
Playing violent video games contributes to physical impairments as it encourages sedimentary lifestyles. It can lead to obesity and high blood pressure. Obesity contributes to the development of ailments, such as heart disease and cancers. Playing violent video games is also detrimental to one’s mental health.
Violent video games are addictive; they can lead to anxiety, depression, and even suicide. The provision of awards and having teams make individuals play for long hours. Survivor Challenge revealed that gamers felt better and happier when they quit playing for 24 hours. Violent video games also lead to sleep deprivation. A survey conducted by the Canadian Sleep Foundation revealed that more than 60% of children and adolescents have chronic sleep deprivation.
Sleep deprivation can lead to poor academic performance. Students who spend time gaming at night are always moody, and they have poor concentration in class. It’s hard for them to memorize, assimilate, and retrieve information. Lack of sleep can also lead to heart problems. Children may also perform poorly in class due to absenteeism. Some children prefer to stay at home to play violent video games rather than go to school. Sexually explicit violent games can lead to sexual molestation and trafficking of children for prostitution.
These violent video games lead to anti-social behaviors among participants. They hinder employability as they prevent individuals from developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The videos also lead to a game transfer phenomenon where the children mimic violent behaviors. Violent video games should be banned to avoid these negative impacts.
