The advantages and disadvantages of delivery with the partner
Giving birth with a partner is becoming a norm not only in the US but also in other European countries. Although some partners cannot make it because of the nature of their job or illnesses, others create time to be with their wives during delivery. There are pros and cons related to the presence of the partner in the delivery room.
Advantages
For some women, the mere presence of their husbands during labor is a significant relief. It makes them feel comfortable. Men should attend courses on partner aided births before delivery. That will enlighten them on how to handle their expectant wife during childbirth. During the first stage of labor, a woman experiences a lot of pain. A man should be there to offer psychological support and help the woman with staying positions.
They should provide cushions and even food and snacks whenever the woman needs them. Men who have attended seminars on how to handle a pregnant woman in labor can assist with breathing and pushing techniques. They also provide massages such as back rubbing. Giving birth is painful and difficult; a woman needs emotional support. A partner should be able to provide emotional support.
The presence of a partner during birth gives them an excellent opportunity to experience the ushering in of their sons and daughters. That is a lifetime experience that they will never forget. It enables the father to bond with the child and also strengthens the relationship with the mother. It also allows them to represent their wives. They can talk to the midwives and tell them what the wife requires. The presence of a partner during caesarian section is a relief to the wife and the health practitioners.
Disadvantages
The birthplace is messy. It contains blood, amniotic fluid, urine, and even feces. Seeing this can leave a man traumatized, and lower the sexual urge towards the partner. It is always wise for a man to attend seminars on how to handle a woman during birth, failure to which the man may not help at all. He may even end up becoming a nuisance. Men who are anxious and worried will add distress to the pregnant partner. They may also interfere with the birth process by distracting the midwives and trying to take over. If you are not sure whether your partner will be comfortable in the delivery room, consider hiring a doula.
