Leaders and Leadership Styles
Leaders and Leadership Styles
The two leaders I met are the head of a marketing department and the CEO of a company. The CEO had a transformative leadership style, while the head of the marketing department had a participative leadership style.
The CEO’s transformative leadership style focused on quality communication, making good employee connections, and developing other people’s potential. For instance, the CEO was focused on developing the strengths of the employees and heads of departments. I noted that the CEO was good at communication. He would always pay attention and practice active listening. His communication skills demonstrate that he is a team leader and can move teams to achieve strategic objectives. One of the negative behaviors I noticed is that the CEO wants to embrace everyone and make them happy, which is unattainable. The approach may lead to lies and poor promises that undermine the relationship with the staff.
The head of marketing had a participative leadership style, which has positive behavior such as listening to the employees’ ideas, encouraging creativity, and increasing employee motivation and creativity. Employees appreciate transactional leaders since they find opportunities to express their ideas. It is the opposite of authoritarian leaders who do not listen to the ideas of their juniors. For instance, I noted that the head of marketing was allowing employees freedom to undertake their tasks to foster their liberty and creativity. However, I noticed that the leader was frustrated when decision-making took too long. I believe transactional leaders must learn the art of patience to allow the employees to exchange ideas and reach a conclusion. However, despite the weaknesses of the two leaders, I still appreciate their excellent work and character.
