Comprehensive integrated psychiatric assessment of children and teens involves gathering information from the child, parents, family members, teachers, and caregivers for a full treatment evaluation and plan to improve the patient’s outcomes (Thapar et al., 2017).
What the practitioner did right and what they could do better
In the YMH Boston Vignette 5 video, the practitioner was very professional when she introduced herself and asked why the consultation and assessment were needed. The doctor told Sean that his privacy and information would be kept secret, which is a key part of building trust and following treatment (Stewart & Hamza, 2017). The practitioner was careful about how he or she asked the questions, which led to a report that the patient was willing to talk, which made the assessment process easier. As required by the guidelines, the doctor let the patient talk about his feelings and symptoms about the condition and asked him about his immediate concerns in his general environment. Even though the patient complained about how his mother treated him, it was clear who he trusted, like his girls’ friends and coach. Because mental illness is so hard to deal with in terms of cultural beliefs, fixed thoughts, and personal insights, it is important to find out who the patient can talk to in order to get all the information needed for a complete treatment plan (Raymond Zhakhari, 2020). The practitioner also looked at the risk of having thoughts of suicide, which is a very important part of a psychiatric mental health assessment. The patient has not only said that he or she wants to kill themselves, but also made plans to do so. One of the most important parts of a compressive psychiatric evaluation is a safety assessment (Wray et al., 2019). The doctor or nurse had to ask the patient about his or her family’s medical and mental health history, which is a very important part of the assessment. Also, the patient’s past treatments, medicines, and social life should be looked at.

Why a thorough psychiatric evaluation of a child or teen is important
Emotional, behavioral, and developmental problems are very important to find out about through a thorough psychiatric evaluation and assessment (Thapar et al., 2017). It is a known fact that a child or teen’s psychiatric evaluation is based on how they act. In order to find the right psychiatric treatment, it is important to do a thorough evaluation. These people don’t know enough about health, so it’s important for them to talk to a therapist in order to get an evaluation. Most kids and teens are more likely to talk to someone who knows how to assess them if they are worried about privacy and trust. Psychiatric assessment is a chance for experts to share their knowledge and work with the psychiatric team to network professionally (Stewart& Hamza, 2017). This assessment gives a structured way to get information and share it with other mental health professionals.
Two different symptom rating scales are used to test kids and teens.
Rating Scale for Young Mania (YMRS): This is an eleven-item rating scale that is used to check children and teens for mental health disorders, especially mood disorders like bipolar (Thapar et al., 2017). The American Academy of Pediatrics made this scale to measure changes in mood and how well therapy is working. It is also used to see how well a therapy is working.
Columbia depression scale: This is a 22-item scale used to check for depression in children and teens. It is used by a professional to figure out how bad the depression is so that they can come up with the right treatment plan.
Options for treating children and teens with psychiatry
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Play Therapy (ACT). These types of therapy have been shown to be effective in treating children and teens with mental health problems (Wheeler, 2020). ACT has been used to help kids and teens change the way they think, which changes how they feel, and to help them understand the pattern of their feelings. The therapist uses play therapy to collect all the ways people act, which are then used to figure out what’s wrong with them.
The Role of Parents and Guardians in the Evaluation of Children and Teenagers
During a full psychiatric evaluation, the parents and guardian are very important. Studies have shown that to get a full picture of a child’s health history, it’s important to get information from different people, like the parents, teachers, caregivers, and other family members (Wheeler, 2020). Parents and guardians give important information about a child’s behavior that might not be seen during an assessment. They take part in the psychiatric intervention to improve their chances of getting better. They keep track of changes and progress, which is used to change the treatment.
