Analysis of the measures taken for the prevention of oil pollution from ships and oil companies in West Africa
Oil is the primary source driver for most West African countries, including Nigeria and Ghana. The industry has been booming for many years to become the major driver of these countries’ economic growth. As a result, these regions are more vulnerable to pollution from oil spills by ships than other countries. The issue concerning oil pollution in West African countries has been a major concern in the past decade. In response, various measures have been taken in an attempt to prevent and control oil pollution and its impact on the marine environment.
Some of the measures taken include:
• Controlled burning is the process of burning freshly spilled oil by setting it on fire to prevent it from mixing with the water.
• Booms- These are barriers that float on the water and are attached to a leaking oil tanker to collect the spilling oil. Booms are fireproof and often used to restrict the burning area.
• Skimmers- Skimmers are polypyrene and pad-like materials placed on the ocean’s surface to absorb the oil film. Usually, after a boom brings together the oil, a skimmer is used to collect it from the water surface.
Other common methods being used to clean the ocean include physical methods to clean areas close to the shoreline and synthetic absorbent materials to collect and prevent further migration of oil spills.
