Introduction
Macro-linguistics is a branch of linguistics that is focused on the larger and broader concepts and tendencies of a language. This is however different from micro-linguistic that relates to much specific and smaller elements of language. This paper will discuss the various elements of micro-linguistics and how they have been covered in the three main branches of macro-linguistics.
Sociolinguistics
Sociolinguistics is concerned with various aspects of society and this includes the expectation and the cultural norms on the way language is used. Group varieties refer to the specific forms of language clusters and they may include dialects and registers. Dialect or accent refers to a speech pattern and it entails grammar and vocabulary. Register is basically the way an individual in a community communicates in order to fit properly in a particular context and be able to convey his or feelings. In spoken English, there are five formalities of register. These include; intimate, casual, consultative, frozen and formal register.
Historical Linguistic
Historical linguistics, also referred to as diachronic linguistic is basically concerned with the change of language over time. It’s also concerned with the study of semantic, phonological and grammatical changes in language. The different subgroups of historical linguistics include etymology, comparative philology, diachronic analysis, and synchronic analysis. Etymology is concerned with the history of words in regards to how they entered the world and their sources. Comparative linguistics compares different languages in order to understand how they are related whereas synchronic analysis is how one views linguistic phenomena at a given time.
Computational Linguistics
Computational linguistics is a macro-linguistics in which various techniques of computers are used to analysis and synthesis speech and language. Examples of various applications of computational linguistics include language-enabled robots, machine translation, virtual games and world’s interactive fiction, knowledge summation and sentimental analysis. Sentimental analysis is concerned with analyzing the different attitudes in authors’ blogs towards a product. Chatbots are used in websites to entertain visitors and keep them engaged. It’s usually used by social media platforms to solicit information from participants or to recommend other websites. Voice-based applications are used in passing commands.
