The Energy Challenge
The Energy Challenge
Renewable energy
Over the last two hundred years, energy needs have skyrocketed in a dramatic way, particularly because of the transportation and industry sectors. Fossil fuels have been meeting most of the country’s energy needs, but they have significantly contributed to environmental pollution and the resulting global warming. Furthermore, fossil fuels are limited, meaning that they will get depleted with time. In fact, some of these resources are about to get exhausted and our societies are facing a major challenge: the energy crisis. Renewable energy presents a solution to this energy crisis. As the name suggests, this energy is collected from renewable resources that are naturally replenished. Sunny skies, winds that are strong, the earth’s heat, plentiful plant matter, and fast-moving water can each offer an enormous and continually replenished energy supply. A relatively tiny fraction of electricity in the United States presently originates from these sources, but that could change: studies have frequently demonstrated that renewable energy can offer a substantial share of future needs of electricity, even after accounting for possible constraints (Rau, 2016).
The good thing about renewable energy sources is that they are perennial and free (apart from biomass), do not pollute the environment during the process of conversion (apart from biomass), and are relatively distributed everywhere: there are regions rich with running rivers, areas that are sunny, regions that are constantly swept by strong and constant winds, or covered by thick forests, or coastal areas that are washed by tides, waves…obviously, renewable energy is everywhere (Silva, 2020). It is thus time the country seriously invested in this energy. Notably, devices used in the exploitation of renewable energy sources are increasingly becoming cheaper. This is good news for the energy sector.
