Critique of Research Article “Detecting Distress Introducing routine screening in a gynecologic cancer setting”
The article renders a comprehensive analysis of the effects of cancer on patients which could include the social, psychological as well as other notable challenges other than the obvious physical complications and side effects which patients undergo (O’Connor et al., 2017). In particular, the authors highlight distress as a major factor whose contribution to all aspects of well-being in a patient cannot be overlooked. In light of the seriousness of distress on the health of cancer patients, the main intention of the article is towards enabling the authors to undertake advocacy for the recognition of distress as a major warning sign in oncology in context of contemporary healthcare (O’Connor et al., 2017). In an effort to justify this recommendation on the centrality of the role which distress plays in negative health of cancer patients, the article uses other peer reviewed sources in support of its position. This essay considers the different aspects of the study which include the finding, research methods, and sample size, limitations among other areas of the research with a view to rendering a critique on their efficacy and to give a suggestion on the best way forward.
The study offers a critical evaluation on the role which screening plays in the process of identification of signs of distress in patients suffering from cancer. Specifically, the researchers focused on patients with gynecologic cancer within WA as the geographical sample population for the study (O’Connor et al., 2017). The research questions included: a) to determine the extent of distress experienced by the patients is a form of problem to persons suffering from cancer; b) what is the prevalence rate of distress among cancer patients; and, c) to investigate the point of view of the staff members on the use of referrals mechanism like PL and DT to address distress in cancer patients (O’Connor et al., 2017). It is evident that the research questions are drafted in a narrow and succinct manner which is a positive idea in making the study concise which is an attribute which attracts the attention of the reader (Martino, Luengo & Míguez, 2018). The recent increase in distress among patients undergoing gynecologic cancer could have triggered the study questions and prompted the researchers to approach the patients living in WA.
The study considered the correlation between variables such as distress among patients suffering from gynecologic cancer and the perception of the staff members on routine screening for the affected population of patients. The study adopted the use of a mixed-methods design to validate its finding under a sampling technique of convenience. At the core of this research method was the use of sixty two participants with gynecologic cancer who were randomly identified at the King Edwards Memorial Hospital in WA. The strength of the research method is that the researcher adopted the use of both qualitative and quantitative data collection mechanism such as the usage of PL and DT to obtain information under the quantitative data gathering (Ledermann, Creutzberg & Quinn, 2014). On the other hand, qualitative method of data collection adopted the use of structured interviews under HCPs as the basis for gathering the relevant information. This analysis observes that the shortcomings in the use of cross-sectional study method by way of a mixed- method design denied the researchers the opportunity to explore the veracity of the research questions (Martino, Luengo & Míguez, 2018). This position is justified on the basis of the fact that a cross- sectional study with a mixed- method design has certain inherent limitations which make it difficult to comprehensively address the depth of the research questions. On this basis, this analysis suggests that the study should have adopted the use of random sampling technique in order to allow the researchers to explore a greater pool of patients hence a higher rate of data validity under study.
On sampling methods, this analysis considers the different aspects of the sampling techniques adopted under the study with a view to offering a suggestion on the way the study could have been done in a much better manner through the use of random sampling technique. This is important because the instant study used a cross- sectional technique which fundamentally reduced the scope of research hence making it nearly impossible for the researcher to fully explore the research questions in a comprehensive manner as postulated (Martino, Luengo & Míguez, 2018). Notably, the study adopted the use of a cross-sectional method under which convenience sampling was done from the female patients with gynecologic cancer who are members of the general population at the King Edwards Memorial Hospital in WA. The sample selection narrowed down on sixty two specific individuals suffering from cancer in the inpatient and outpatient section of the hospital. It is important to note that this choice of female participants only demonstrates the sample selection bias under the study because of the choice of non- random data technique of cross sectional sampling. This bias is a major contributor to the absence of data validity in the instant research (Martino, Luengo & Míguez, 2018). The bias in the technique of sampling is evident in the process of data collection since it refrained from obtaining information from the general public who do not have experience with the cancer disease under study.
The data collection methods in the study include qualitative and quantitative methods by use of PL and DT as well as structured interviews under HCPs. The collection process was conducted by the RO who invited sixty two female participants to take part in the study through the use of the qualitative and quantitative tools of data gathering. The notable factors which bring into question the validity of data collected during the study include the geographical distribution of the study participants who were only narrowed down to WA (Liamputtong, Beeson & Hameiri, 2017). The sampling technique should have considered the geographical scatter of the participants before administering questionnaires to the outpatients suffering from gynecologic cancer at hospital. This analysis observes that geographical distribution is an important aspect of sampling because it could have allowed the researchers in the instant study to narrow down on the size of the population being sampled in a larger area other than just WA. The identification of the population size during the process of cross-sectional sampling could have enabled the researcher to validate the results obtained from the survey in a more effective manner (Yeung, Escalante & Gagel, 2009). This position is justified on the basis of the fact the accuracy of the research process in many cases depends on the relevance of the information given by the participants hence the need for the estimation of the sample size. The study showed that the researchers took into consideration the ethical aspects of the study by offering consent forms to the participants of the study hence observing the right to confidentiality (Holland, Breitbart & Jacobsen, 2010). However, the study should have considered both male and female gender to avoid any potential claims of discrimination and bias which may affect the validity of the entire research process. Additionally, the privacy of the participants in regards to non- disclosure of their health statuses should have been explained to them in a proper manner.
The limitations of the study include the inherent aspects which made the study process unattainable and which may also serve to affect the validity of the research. The limitations include the fact that the study adopted the use of cross-sectional sampling and not random data technique (Liamputtong, Beeson & Hameiri, 2017). This choice made the process of research more impractical and the researcher should have considered the aspect discussed under this analysis to further validate the findings of the study. The research finding demonstrated the existence of a relationship between certain variables such as distress and concerns on screening needs among staff members. Specifically, of the sixty two women participants, sixty six percent showed the correlation between distress in cancer patients and screening. This finding demonstrates the need for the mandated healthcare stakeholders to recognize distress as a major sign of oncology (Yeung, Escalante & Gagel, 2009). The findings of the study serve to answer the questions posed under the instant research although this analysis suggests that there are additional factors which may affect the validity of the findings as discussed.
In conclusion, it is noteworthy that although cross-sectional method which uses convenience sampling is practical and preferred, this method fails to adopt the use of past statistical data in order to ensure maximum reduction of error margin in the instant research process. It is based on such a formulation that this analysis suggests that the researcher should have used random sampling of the population in order to obtain more accurate results in the findings of the study. The use of random sampling is especially more preferred since it enables the research to have a clear sample size by looking at the geographical distribution. It is only through the suggested methods under this analysis that the research on the correlation between distress and screening of patients suffering from gynecologic cancer may become conclusive and capable of declaring distress as a sign of oncology.
