What are the Responsibilities of the Registered Nurse in the Regards to the Use of Social Media?
A registered nurse can use social media to enhance connections with other health personnel, share information and communicate with family members. The responsibilities must be exercised with caution to avoid breaching the policies that govern the delivery of care. One of the responsibilities is to always uphold confidentiality (Moorley & Chinn, 2016). Nurses should share information upon receiving consent from the patients. It is unethical to share information such as names, photos and medical conditions of a patient without consent. A valid consent should be given by the patient and not the relatives or close friends. The second responsibility is to avoid posting negative comments that may undermine the quality of care or welfare of other healthcare providers (Moorley & Chinn, 2016). For example, nurses should not post negative comments about their co-workers which may amount to cyberbullying. Negative comments may attract legal sanctions against a nurse.
Nurses should always observe the words they use while sharing information on social media. It is necessary to observe the cultural diversity among patients to avoid undermining the confidence of patients in quality healthcare. For instance, a Missouri nurse was fired after she posted a photo with the husband in Halloween party disguised as Jay-Z and Beyoncé. Additionally, nurses should refrain from sharing information that is obscene, sexually explicit, derogatory or homophobic (Moorley & Chinn, 2016). For example, a nurse was fired after sharing a photo of a messy surgery room in New York-Presbyterian Hospital. The information shared on social media should also not discriminate patients based on their quality of health, behavior or background. According to Moorley and Chinn (2016), another responsibility is that nurses should not rant about their place of work on social media. They should utilize the right channels to communicate their grievances rather than peddling their complaints online.
