Research on prevention of ship-induced pollution to drinking water source
Research on prevention of ship-induced pollution to drinking water source
Drinking water quality on board ships is essential for the health and safety of crew members and passengers. However, ships can also pose a threat to the drinking water source in the coastal areas where they operate, especially in densely populated and industrialized regions such as the Yangtze Estuary of Shanghai Sector. This paper aims to analyze the main sources and impacts of ship-induced pollution to the drinking water source in this area, and to propose some preventive measures and recommendations.
According to Zhu (2015), the Yangtze Estuary of Shanghai Sector is one of the most important drinking water sources for Shanghai, providing about 70% of its water supply. However, this area is also a busy shipping hub, with more than 100,000 ships passing through annually. The main sources of ship-induced pollution to the drinking water source include: oil spills, sewage discharges, bilge water releases, ballast water exchanges, garbage dumping, and antifouling paint leaching. These pollutants can contaminate the water quality, affect the aquatic ecosystem, and pose health risks to the consumers.
Some of the preventive measures and recommendations to reduce the ship-induced pollution to the drinking water source are: implementing stricter regulations and enforcement on ship pollution prevention and control; enhancing the monitoring and supervision of ship activities and water quality; improving the emergency response and contingency plans for oil spill accidents; promoting the use of environmentally friendly technologies and practices on board ships; and raising the awareness and education of ship operators and crew members on the importance of protecting the drinking water source.
