Higher-order thinking is a concept that refers to the cognitive skills that go beyond the basic recall and comprehension of information. Higher-order thinking is essential for students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and metacognition abilities. One of the ways to foster higher-order thinking in students is to design learning activities that require them to engage in higher-order thinking processes. For example, teachers can use inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, case-based learning, or problem-based learning as instructional strategies that promote higher-order thinking. These strategies involve students in posing questions, conducting research, analyzing data, generating solutions, presenting findings, and reflecting on their learning. Through these activities, students can deepen their understanding of the concepts and principles they learn, and develop their ability to apply them to real-world problems.
Another way to foster higher-order thinking in students is to provide them with feedback and guidance that support their higher-order thinking development. For example, teachers can use formative assessment, scaffolding, questioning, and peer feedback as techniques that enhance higher-order thinking. These techniques involve teachers in monitoring students’ progress, providing timely and specific feedback, prompting students to think deeper and broader, and facilitating students’ collaboration and communication. Through these techniques, teachers can help students identify their strengths and weaknesses, improve their self-regulation and metacognition skills, and learn from each other’s perspectives and experiences.
Higher-order thinking is a vital skill for students to succeed in the 21st century. It enables students to cope with the complexity and uncertainty of the world, and to become lifelong learners who can adapt to changing situations and demands. Therefore, teachers should strive to create a learning environment that fosters higher-order thinking in students, by using effective instructional strategies and techniques that challenge and support students’ higher-order thinking development.
