This assignment has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your
achievement of the following module learning outcomes:
LO 1 Identify, search, and retrieve academic information relevant to business and management issues.
LO 2 Demonstrate an ability to use effective and appropriate academic skills when exploring business
and management issues.
LO 3 Understand and implement good academic practice and know how to avoid academic malpractice.
LO 4 Review academic resources in the field of business and tourism management and synthesize
them to produce and present a literature review.
The assignment will enable students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of good academic
practice, this includes academic and professional conventions such as effective research, referencing,
avoiding plagiarism and academic writing skills.

You are required to identify and discuss three core Academic skills for student success
in a Business and Tourism Management Degree.

Write a 1200-word reflective essay that identifies THREE key Academic skills contributing towards
the success of a Business and Tourism Management Degree.

Your essay needs to include the following:
1. Introductory paragraph (120 Words):
a. Using reliable sources, define academic skills and explain why it is important to master these
skills in a Higher Education environment.
b. To provide a list of academic skills important in successfully completing a Business and
Tourism Management degree.
c. To highlight the THREE academic skills that your essay will be focused on.
2. The main body paragraphs (960 words, i.e., one paragraph of 320 words for each chosen skill):
Discuss each of the academic skills you have chosen to include the following:
a. Provide a detailed description/definition of the skill.
b. Incorporate a variety of views and sources to discuss how this skill contributes to academic
writing success in general.
1. Reflect on Three of the skills you have learnt and used this term.
2. Apply the skills in one of your modules.
3. Evaluate your experience of using the skills.
4. Examine the impact of the skills on student learning and ways such skills can lead to success in
academic writing.
5. Identify action plans on how the skills can help you in your future studies.
6. Choose ONLY THREE skills from the list below to write your essay:
a) Research skills
b) Referencing skills
c) Proof Reading
d) Note Taking
e) Planning
f) Structure and Academic Tone
g) Time Management
h) Paraphrasing
Important:
All your work must be based on reliable research and have a minimum of 10 different sources
within it. Please ensure you use both direct and indirect citations.

c. Reflect on your personal experience of learning and using the skill during the term (During
Module 1). Provide personal examples from your Module.
d. Explain how developing this skill has positively impacted your academic success.
e. Outline specific action plans to further develop and utilize this skill to succeed in your future
studies.
All information must be drawn from research including the list of sources. Remember a discussion is
to use a variety of different views /sources to explain the point you are making in the paragraph.
3. Conclusive Paragraph (120 Words):

b. To provide a brief explanation whether or not the three chosen skills contribute to successfully
completing a Business and Tourism Management degree.

How your work will be assessed
Your work will be assessed on the extent to which it demonstrates your achievement of the stated learning
outcomes for this assignment (see above) and against other key criteria, as defined in the University’s
institutional grading descriptors. If it is appropriate to the format of your assignment and your subject area,
a proportion of your marks will also depend upon your use of academic referencing conventions.
This assignment will be marked according to the grading descriptors for Level 0.
Submission details
This assignment should be submitted electronically via Moodle (module tutors will discuss this process with
you during class time).
• Please ensure that your work has been saved in an appropriate file format (Microsoft Word or Google
Docs). Ensure your file is under 40 MB, contains at least 20 words, and has fewer than 400 pages.
• Please ensure that you include the CCCU Front Cover Page, which can be downloaded from Moodle,
when submitting your assignment.
• Please ensure that you have submitted your work in the correct link on the assessment
tab.
• Once you have submitted your work, you will receive a digital receipt as proof of submission, which
will be sent to your forwarded e-mail address (provided you have set this up). Please keep this receipt
for future reference, along with the original electronic copy of your assignment
