SOCIETY PROJECT
INTRODUCTION
Interdisciplinary study involves crossing traditional boundaries in education to create a unique project-based learning opportunity. Exploring principles, theories, and philosophies across different schools of thought helps to reshape, redefine, and enrich your learning experience. In this lesson, you will explore a wide range of societies and their characteristics, based on six tenets of society: sustainability, sociology/diversity, politics/philosophy, technology, global citizenship, and ethics. You will then choose a society to analyze, based on these concepts.
Think of this lesson as embarking on a journey of discovery, a journey in which you take charge of your own learning and determine the depth with which you explore and interpret different schools of thought related to different societies. In each topic, you will have the opportunity to write about your chosen society based on the material covered in each topic.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Conduct an interdisciplinary investigation of a contemporary or historical society of your choice.
The goal of this lesson is to help students develop creative analysis skills based on an interdisciplinary investigation of sustainability, sociology/diversity, politics/philosophy, technology, global citizenship, and ethics.
DELIVERABLES:
For each topic, there should be a 750-1000 word summary. The requirements for each topic is listed below. After each of the summaries have been written for each topic, a final 2,000 word reflection should be completed.
All details are outlined below for each topic.
Lesson Guide
For the first topic, you will learn how to evaluate the people, religions, cultural symbols, food, customs, literature, and arts in your chosen society. You will delve into the similarities and distinctions between people within the same society.
For the second topic, you will review the concept of sustainability. Discover the role of ecology and climate change and modes of sustainability.
For the third topic, discover the role of politics in your chosen society, with special emphasis on the role of government organizations, public institutions, and cultural values.
For the fourth topic, you will learn how technological inventions and advancements impact the performance of tasks, processes, and procedures in your chosen society.
For the fifth topic, examine the role of global citizenship, and how the individual in society fits into the overall landscape of the world.
For the sixth topic, review the role of ethics, and how religions, values, and laws may be similar or different within your chosen society.
For the seventh topic, you will create a written reflection that discusses all six tenets of the society specifically. In this topic, you will also make recommendations for areas where you perceive weakness and/or ineffectiveness.
TOPIC 1 PEOPLE
TOPIC OBJECTIVE:
Evaluate the people, religions, cultural symbols, food, customs, literature, and arts in your chosen society.
Society is defined as a group of people relating to one another through shared cultural and geographical experiences. People within the same society may share different elements of the same lifestyle. They may share the same religions, customs, and foods, for example. In this topic, you will evaluate the people, religions, cultural symbols, food, customs, literature, and arts in your chosen society.
In the course of your evaluation, you may find similarities in one arena and differences in another. For example, you may find instances where people share the same food, but not the same customs in relation to the food. Likewise, some people within the same society may worship on the same days of the week, but their religions and customs may differ. At the end of this topic, you will have a broader perspective on the similarities and distinctions of people within the same society.
ASSIGNMENT:
For this assignment, you will select a society that you would like to investigate for the duration of this lesson. You will be an expert on this culture by the conclusion of this lesson. Your society can be a contemporary one like your current community or another around the world. Your society may also be an ancient society such as the Aztecs or ancient Egyptians. Your choice of society is limited only by your creativity. It is important to spend time on your decision at this point in the lesson, because this will be the society you study for all remaining topics.
In 750- to 1000-words, summarize what you have learned about the people, religion, cultural symbols, food, customs, and arts in your chosen society.
TOPIC 2 SUSTAINABILITY
TOPIC OBJECTIVE:
Assess the ecology, climate, and examples of modes of sustainability in your chosen society.
Ecology is the study of the environment and how living things relate to one another within the same environment. The field of ecology dates back to the recorded observations of Aristotle and Hippocrates, and includes the study of Earth science as well as genetics and biology. From a practical perspective, ecologists apply their skills to the fields of agriculture, urban renewal, forestry, and health sciences, as well as other fields such as climate change. Climate change pertains to changes in the earths temperature (i.e., global warming), as well as the impact of weather-related occurrences, such as floods, droughts, rainfalls, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, and heat waves.
In this topic, you will learn about ecology and the climate, and the relationship between the two, within the context of sustainability the ability of the planet to maintain itself in spite of environmental changes and challenges. At the end of this topic, you will have a firmer understanding of human life on the planet and our contributions to sustaining the environment. Apply this understanding of ecology and sustainability to your chosen society.
ASSIGNMENT:
For this assignment, you will summarize in 750-1000 words, the sustainability efforts of your chosen society. Your summary should include a discussion of ecology and climate, along with examples of modes of sustainability (no matter how old your society or civilization might be, all communities preserve/store resources in some way).
TOPIC 3 POLITICS
TOPIC OBJECTIVE:
Analyze the government organization, public institutions, and cultural values in your chosen society.
Politics pertains to state, local, national, and international governance of society from the perspective of authoritative rule by special interest groups. Government officials establish rules in society that determine the laws, or legal procedures and processes, that govern behavior within the society. Although politics is typically viewed from the standpoint of constitutional doctrine and laws established by elected officials, it can also be thought of in terms of public institutions, such as those found in the educational sector, and cultural values, such as those established by clergy, high-ranking military officials, and members of professional athletic associations.
Within the society of professional athletes, for example, there are political ramifications of steroid use, which violates the code of honor, and hence the cultural values, established for all professional athletes. In this topic, you will explore the politics involved in your chosen society. You will learn how the term politics means different things to different people within a given society, and you may find your definition of politics changing as you delve into the relationship between government organizations, public institutions, and cultural values. Apply this understanding of politics, public institutions, and cultural values to your chosen society.

For this assignment, you will analyze in 750-1000 words, the government organizations, public institutions, and cultural values in your chosen society.
TOPIC 4 TECHNOLOGY
TOPIC OBJECTIVE:
Explore the industry, technological advancements, and inventions in your chosen society.
Technology pertains to using systems, tools, machines, and systematic processes to increase human productivity and output. The goal of technology is to improve efficiency, increase functionality, and solve productivity problems in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible. Technology plays a role in all areas of society, from the society in which we live to historical societies. Historical societies are organizations that collect information related to paintings, sculptures, and artifacts. This information can be accessed through computer terminals called interactive kiosks, which allow visitors to explore paintings, documents, and artifacts within the society using a touch screen, card swipe feature, or computer keyboard, for example.
Early advancements include the invention of the printing press in the 1400s, the invention of the first radio receiver in the 1890s, and the invention of the television in the 1920s. These early inventions served as a springboard for future technological advancement, leading to the modes of communication that we now take for granted, such as mobile phones, iPods, iPads, Skype, and online social networks such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. In this topic, you will learn about the role of technology in society, and how humans in society use technology to complete a wide range of tasks, from the most basic to the most complex. At the end of this topic, you may find yourself using technology in ways that you never thought possible, and with a keener understanding of the technology industry as a whole. Apply this understanding of industry and advancements to your chosen society.
ASSIGNMENT:
In 750- 1000-words, choose one industry, technological advancement, or invention, and analyze the impact of the invention on your chosen society.
TOPIC 5 GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP
TOPIC OBJECTIVE:
Appraise the commerce, citizen rules and responsibilities, and allies/enemies in your chosen society.
The concept of global citizenship describes the ability of an individual within society to consider themselves a member of a global network of people, and not just within a society. The theory of global citizenship stems from the Greek philosopher Socrates, who stated that an individual is a citizen of the world, not just of society. The Declaration of Human Rights, established by the UN General Assembly in 1948, took this theory one step further, stating that all individuals have dignity and rights, as well as the ability to reason. According to this declaration, the ultimate goal of individuals in society is to foster a spirit of oneness and kinship with others in the society.
The Declaration of Independence outlined global citizenship as all men being created equal and having the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In this topic, you will explore the theory of global citizenship, and form your own definition of what it means to be a global citizen. You will also learn about the role of commerce, citizen rules and responsibilities, and allies and enemies within a society, and what these issues mean within in the framework of becoming a global citizen. At the end of the topic, you may find yourself considering your own role in society differently, and reconstructing your view of all individuals within a society. Apply this understanding of global citizenship to your chosen society.
ASSIGNMENT:
In 750-to 1000-words, appraise the commerce, citizen rules and responsibilities, and allies/enemies in your chosen society.
TOPIC 6 ETHICS
TOPIC OBJECTIVE:
Analyze the religions, values, and laws in your chosen society.
Ethics is the ability to determine right from wrong, and to modify behavior based on this determination. Ethics may pertain strictly to morality and how truth is determined, or it may extend to choosing a course of action based on morality, challenging a persons belief system, or analyzing how morality applies to the outcome of different situations. Ethical behavior may occur in relation to one individual or within the context of society as a whole.
The study of ethics evolved based on the theories of Greek philosophers, such as Socrates and Aristotle, who considered the roles of self-knowledge, virtue, happiness, and moderation, for example, in relation to societal behavior. In this topic, you will learn about the principles of ethics, and how ethics relates to religion, values, and laws within society. At the end of the topic, you will see how ethics transcend a wide variety of situations, and influence patterns of behavior within society. Apply this understanding of ethical value systems to your chosen society.
ASSIGNMENT:
In 750-to1000-words, write an analysis of the religions, values, and laws in your chosen society.
FINAL REFLECTION
TOPIC OBJECTIVE:
Create a 2000-word reflection on the viability, effectiveness, and impact of the society, discussing all six tenets of the society specifically, making recommendations for areas where you perceive weakness/ineffectiveness.
Reflection is the process of carefully considering and weighing elements of one or more topics. As part of your interdisciplinary studies, you will reflect on the six tenets of society: people, sustainability, politics, technology, global citizenship, and ethics. This topic gives you the opportunity to assimilate materials based on earlier topics, to ponder the viability, effectiveness and impact of the society, and subsequently write about your reflections. Based on your thoughts and ideas on the six tenets of society, you will make recommendations for areas where you perceive weakness and/or ineffectiveness.
ASSIGNMENT:
In 2000 words, reflect on the viability, effectiveness, and impact of your chosen society, discussing all tenets of the society specifically, and making recommendations for areas where you perceive weakness/ineffectiveness.
