In search of the true self
True self is simply looking down deep within ourselves and be that person one is supposed to be. The author argues that lack of true self is betraying that essential person you really are, essentially a person might find himself or herself having various urges or fleeting emotions, but these are not who she or he most fundamentally is. Rationally, for a person to find the true self, one has to look to the moments when you stop to reflect and think about your deepest values.
Moreover, according to the example drawn from the text we see Pierpoint who is gay betrays his true self by going alongside his religion and preaching out how immoral is to get attracted to a man when you are of the same gender. Yet he has always wanted to be with a man, but somehow he picked up from his religion that the idea is forbidden. If he were to move away from his beliefs, he would be able to fully express the person he really is. The author argues that one should not hide his true self despite of the belief he or she comes from, rather to respect his main ideal self-deep within himself.
In conclusion, for one to become the true self one has to follow that one deeply desires not what people look up to you. As from the text we see people who are not following their true self in fear of their surrounding such as marrying a woman, yet he is not attracted to women of which his true self was being attracted to men. It is well evident from the author that one should follow his or her within self to abide by your true self. Citing true self from conservative items and liberal items it is well evident that people run away from being true due to what they abide to mostly their beliefs and originalities. Thus being true to yourself is to accept your deep self and not betray yourself in reflection to the current environment that one is living in.
