BIOL 107: Presentation Assignment

BIOL 107: Presentation Assignment (100 points)

Directions for the assignment

1. Topic approval: You may select any disease or disorder that you feel is significant to you. Perhaps a member of your family is struggling with that disorder. Perhaps the disease runs in your family. Perhaps you just find it interesting. You may also use the list on page 2 to help guide you in your selection. Once you have made a selection, please let your instructor know so that you can get your topic approved. Due date: 21 February 2019
• Grading: submitted on time – 6 points

2. Preliminary research and outline: Begin reading about and taking notes on your topic. Create a one-page typed summary of your findings covering at least 4 of the 6 content areas. Also include an outline of proposed slides. Include at least four sources with appropriate citations in APA format with the summary. Your references must be from valid and reliable sources. If you are unsure of your source, check with your instructor. The text book from class and the professor’s notes, or unreliable sources such as Wikipedia, do NOT count as valid sources. Please do not include them as one of your four (minimum) references. You may consult them for direction during the early stages of your research, but they should only be used as pointers that encourage further investigation into other resources. Also develop an outline that shows the content you intend to include on each slide. Due date: TBA
• Submitted on time – 4 points
• Summary and outline includes at least four valid, reliable (SPOT) resources – 8 points
• Information is included on at least 4 of the content areas (see #3) – 12 points

3. Developing your presentation: Preliminary draft presentations will be emailed no later than TBA to give your instructor time to review and comment before you create your final draft. Please place: “BIOL107 PRESENTATION ROUGH DRAFT” in the subject line of your email. The final draft will be due (TBA). Presentations will be the last week of class before finals week. There should be 5 content slides that include the content areas below.
Your presentation should flow in a logical manner. Be sure to include a title slide and a references slide. The wording of the presentation should be clear and concise with correct punctuation and spelling; bullets should be used rather than full sentences. Proper medical/anatomical terminology should be used wherever possible. Slides should include graphics and/or pictures with detailed information in the notes section. Presentations will be submitted to Blackboard. You must include the discussion concepts below that are in bold (#1-4) and at least one of the discussion concepts (#5 or #6) not in bold:
1. normal anatomy & physiology of the selected organ/organ system;
2. cause of the selected disease/disorder including transmission (for genetic disorders, discuss dominance and X-linkage, as appropriate);
3. how major organs and organ systems are affected by the selected disease/disorder;
4. available prevention and/or methods of treatment;
5. potential geographical and/or ethnic and/or cultural aspects of the selected disease/disorder;
6. how the fight against this disease differs in developed and underdeveloped countries.

• Grading criteria: See accompanying grade sheet and rubric.

4. In-class presentation: You will give your presentation to the class on 29 November 2018.
