Intersectionality in the film “City of God”
One point per question plus one point for overall writing quality, one for spelling/grammar, and one for APA style of in-text citation. Read Collins, P. H. (2015). “Intersectionality’s Definitional Dilemmas”. Annual Review of Sociology 41(1): 1-20. Available on BB Home page and here. The point is not merely to cite Collins (2015), but to also cite and discuss the authors Collins cites, using what is known as indirect citation. See LINKS and this section on Indirect Citation for how to learn this important APA style skill to cite David Gil, cited in an early paper by Dover. For example: (Gil, 1984, p. 26, cited in Dover, 2016, p. 4). Students are encouraged to watch and refer to this video on The Urgency of Intersectionality by Kimberly Crenshaw, JD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akOe5-UsQ2o
1. What does Dr. Collins mean by intersectionality? Describe this in terms used by the author, using properly introduced quotes, paraphrasing (with page number provided), and then discuss in your own words AND write your own definition of intersectionality. About 250 word in length.
2. How does intersectionality and its concepts apply to you or someone you know well either personally or professionally (fully disguised)? For this person, what are the labels, identities and categories that are relevant to their lives? For instance, this may include per CSWE: “The dimensions of diversity are understood as the intersectionality of multiple factors including but not limited to age, class, color, culture, disability and ability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, immigration status, marital status, political ideology, race, religion/spirituality, sex, sexual orientation, and tribal sovereign status (C2 K2).” How does understanding this person’s intersectionality reinforce your understanding of the history of racism in this country in each one of us? Write your answer here in bold face:
3. In about 150 words, apply the concept of intersectionality to one or more character from your film, being sure to discuss the reading and how its concepts are relevant, using properly introduced quotes and paraphrasing (with page number provided), so that you will have a solid start on the relevant answers for your film review. Also, discuss which dimensions of diversity are relevant to your film: “Diversity and difference characterize and shape the human experience and are critical to the formation of identity (C2 K1) and/or “The dimensions of diversity are understood as the intersectionality of multiple factors including but not limited to age, class, color, culture, disability and ability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, immigration status, marital status, political ideology, race, religion/spirituality, sex, sexual orientation, and tribal sovereign status (C2 K2).”
