The electronic health record (EHR) is an important tool for medical and general health professionals. lt is difficult to focused on the patient care would be today without the contributions of the EHRs, more so when the systems are viewed as a good substitute for the paper record keeping system. Today, the EHRs are the product of long-term innovation and continuous improvement. The advancement of modern EHR goes above the paper record keeping system. Apart from providing real-time information, the patient-centered records of health, the EHRs help in enabling the medical professionals to enhance the access and transmission of records (Busch, Bates, & Rauch, 2018). lncreased access to information helps to streamline the workflow for the health care providers and enhancing efficiency and the quality of care provided to the patients. EHRs also allows for quick and accurate collaboration between the different stakeholders and most systems that provides quality access to a range of evidence-based tools that helps to make effective decisions about health care.
The EHRs of the 1990s could not be recognized today. Before the passage of the HlPAA requirements, the EHR capabilities did not align to any proper standards. The 2000s witnessed a new innovation of EHRs developed around the security guidelines that are implemented today.
Technical, physical, and administrative safeguards were integrated into the new EHR products including common protections such as automatic data backups, data encryption, access control, and audit trails.

Earlier systems were effective in the collection data from numerous clinical sources and the review of the systems by the relevant medical professionals.

According to Adler-Milstein and Jha (2017), in 2015, the adoption rate of EHRs in the clinics was 90 per cent. lndependent clinics had a lower adoption rate at 80% because of financial restrictions (Adler-Milstein & Jha, 2017). Health practices that implements the EHR systems enjoys different benefits. The EHR leads to increased continuity of health care. Most people expect to visit more than one doctor in their life, and EHRs allows every health provider to get comprehensive access to new patient’s records and information. lnstead of waiting for a long time to get the appropriate information, the health care providers could get access to health information effectively. The EHRs also led to improved efficiency. ln different situations where the clinicians communicate effectively with each other, the EHRs would reduce on time wastage. lmproved emergency response and preparedness is critical. ln different emergencies such as natural disasters, the time wasted in handling the paper records would lead to adverse outcomes for the patients (Adler-Milstein, et al., 2015).
With the use of EHR, the clinicians would get proper information at the proper time and increasing efficiency in disaster moments. The EHRs allows for the access to quality care and improved security for patient information. With the passage of HlTECH Act in 2009, the HlPAA restrictions were strengthened and being subject to tight enforcement. lmproved EHRs helped to make the compliance with the regulations easy (Busch, et al., 2018). Access controls and encryption with proper authentication would make practice simple to remain in compliance without committing resources and more time.
