Health Issues of Immigrants
The impact report presents the health concerns of new immigrants from the Sub-Saharan region in Africa. One of the common health issues is Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) whose outbreak is recurrent in the region. It is thus important for all the health departments to be ready for the assessment and diagnosis of the immigrants. Preventive measures will be necessary to prevent infected people from crossing the border and interacting with the public. The health risk is high since the disease can lead to death within a few days. Additionally, currently, there is no known cure for the virus. Protection is thus out the only tool to prevent new infections in our country. The diagnosis and treatment will take care of the cultural values associated with the disease. The impact report provides evidence-based strategies for the nursing staff to ensure they prepare to enhance the health and wellness of the immigrants.
Health Concerns for the Population
The health concern for the immigrants from the Sub-Saharan region in Africa is Ebola Virus Disease. The disease has led to deaths of hundreds of people in the region over the last few years. The area has been dominated by recurrent outbreaks which pose a health challenge to immigrants since the disease can reoccur anytime (Kakooza-Mwesige, Mohammed, Kristensson, Juliano & Lutwama, 2018). The condition was reported in some sections of Democratic Republic of Congo in July 2019. It is thus necessary to take caution since the immigrants may carry the infections (Tumwine, 2019). In 2014, a man from West Africa was diagnosed with travel-associated Ebola virus on his way to Dallas, Texas. The possibility of travel-associated Ebola virus requires adequate preparation.
The population of immigrants has left their country in a rush due to various challenges back in their country. Therefore, no adequate checks were carried out since the people were fleeing to a safer environment (Manguvo & Mafuvadze, 2015). They comprise of students who might have interacted with other learners from different parts of the country. The risk of infection is thus high among the immigrants. Currently, the Ebola virus is the condition that should be given the priority due to the high rate of death and transmission (Manguvo & Mafuvadze, 2015). Other departments will focus on other less-risky diseases including mumps, measles, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis.
Treatment
The treatment of the virus disease requires early diagnosis since the Food and Drugs Administration has not identified any formal treatment of the virus. However, the measures taken include an in-depth analysis of the diagnosis to prevent misdiagnosis of the condition (Ajisegiri, Chughtai & MacIntyre, 2018). Once the condition is identified, the patient should be isolated immediately with due care taken to prevent transmission. The survival rate of the patient depends on their immune system and other health factors such as supportive care. Early diagnosis improves the chances of survival of a patient (Schafer et al., 2018). Supportive care comprises of providing fluids and electrolytes which provide the sufficient salts needed by the body. The fluids are used to replace the water lost through hemorrhage. The patient should be provided with oxygen support to ensure the right oxygen status is maintained.
Patients should be treated based on the occurrence of the symptoms which include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and pain. Health professionals should also watch out for other health conditions that may occur and require urgent attention (Keshtkar-Jahromi et al., 2018). The treatment of diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and pain should be at an advanced stage since the patient should recover from them to stop deteriorating general body weakness. Additionally, vomiting and diarrhea should be managed using the best available treatment to prevent further loss of body fluids, which can lead to dehydration and eventually death. Therefore, nurses should focus on the symptoms to promote early diagnosis which increases chances of survival. The symptoms include headache, fever and general body weakness (Keshtkar-Jahromi et al., 2018). Although the symptoms are not specific, such signs should not be taken lightly. It is also important for the nurses to ask questions about possible exposure to Ebola patients to ascertain the possibility of the virus.
Traditional Beliefs
Traditional beliefs have prohibited early and successful diagnosis and treatment. One of the traditional beliefs is that some ethnic groups do not appreciate the role of hospitals. They believe hospitals cut off some parts of the patient and bring back the cadaver (Bavari, 2018). The failure to take patients to hospitals increased the risk of death. In some cases, medical personnel who come to treat patients at home are chased away. Another traditional belief is that the cadaver should be washed for cleansing purposes before burial. The cleansing is done in the presence of family members. The process exposes the family members to the risk of infection (Manguvo & Mafuvadze, 2015). Therefore, the spread of the virus and can wipe out a whole family within a short time. World Health Organization indicates that funeral and burial practices are a source of 80 percent of new infections.
The immigrants believe that the virus is as a result of a curse. They do not believe that medical procedures can prevent or treat the condition. The traditional beliefs expose the communities to the risk of infection and the fast spread of the virus (Manguvo & Mafuvadze, 2015). The burial preparation involves sleeping next to a corpse for several days as a sign of transferring power. The people who sleep next to the dead body are thus exposed to the risk of infection. The process of cleansing a corpse involves bathing in the water that was used to cleanse the body. It increases the chances of exposure to the virus (Manguvo & Mafuvadze, 2015). Communities in Sub-Saharan African embrace the culture of compassionate care for the sick. In some cases, nurses have been infected when they rush unprotected to attend to a person who collapsed in the hospital.
The communities in the region engage in cultural methods for sick people. They engage traditional healers, fortune tellers, witches, and diviners. A high rate of infection was associated with traditional methods of healing the condition (Kakooza-Mwesige et al., 2018). The traditional healer can hold the patient as a way of transferring their magical powers of healing. Additionally, the patient may receive a prescription of herbal medicine, which cannot contain the virus (Tumwine, 2019). Therefore, during the last outbreaks in the region, many deaths have been associated with attempts to use traditional methods of treatment.
Conclusion
The impact report is meant to show the extent of the health precautions that should be taken to prevent the disease from spreading in the country. It is necessary for nurses to take sufficient measures to avoid infection. The purpose of the report is also to identify the cases and refer the patients to immediate intensive supportive care to enhance the chances of survival. It is also meant to brief the nurses of what to expect and the medical procedures they should be ready to carry out. The report will be used as a tool to prepare for the nurses and enhance the quality of care for the immigrants.
